Mark's story

Because of a constant low mood, negative harmful thoughts, insomnia and patterns of self-harm, Mark* was on long-term leave from work and was receiving income protection payments. Wanting things to change, he contacted the Mental Health Navigator service available through Vivo.

Mark has a long history of mental health issues and diagnoses, including Schizoaffective Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), and chronic post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and has been undergoing treatment since he was a teenager.

He’d been previously treated by a range of mental health services, and on several occasions, he’d required inpatient care due to suicide attempts. Mark also required regular contact with mental health services and was currently under the care of a psychiatrist and a caseworker.

A mental health nurse met with Mark via video chat and evaluated his symptoms. He was then scheduled for a comprehensive telehealth assessment with a consulting psychiatrist. After that assessment, the psychiatrist wrote a detailed report outlining Mark’s relevant history, his current symptoms and treatment recommendations.

“It’s been really great to see some improvement in some of Mark’s symptoms, and to be able to support him to return to some functionality and to work.”

The consulting psychiatrist Mark connected with through Mental Health Navigator confirmed a diagnosis of Schizoaffective Disorder, BPD, and chronic PTSD. They recommended that Mark stay in regular contact with his treating psychiatrist, case manager, and psychologist, that he changes his existing medication and undergoes Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). The psychiatrist also suggested that Mark work closely with his rehabilitation provider to return to work gradually.

Mark shared his report with his treating psychiatrist and began the process of working out a change in his medication. He also planned to share the report with his treating psychologist.

After three months, Mark returned to work with a graded return to work plan. He is working four hours per day and plans to increase his work hours as he continues to feel better.

“Mental Health Navigator has given me hope.” he says.
